Whether you’re an actor, entrepreneur or just want to create a platform. You’re gonna need some bomb photography. In the world of websites and social media a visual presence has never been more important. This is a step that will totally set you apart from the rest. But in order for the photographer to capture what you’re about, you have to know what you’re all about first. Here’s the 5 questions that I always ask my branding clients to give them the imagery that will attract their ideal people:
What will you be using these images for? The more specific these answers are, the better. Like, let’s say you’ve been working on a website, and know for sure that you need a photo where you’re looking off to the side at some text that’s important. Branding content needs to be specific and insanely useful to you.
Any color schemes on your website or social media I should be aware of? Obvs—if you’ve been around for a bit, you might get the idea that colors are pretty important to me. They evoke lots of emotion and that is powerful. I can create schemes at the shoot, but the vision will be a lot more complete and cohesive if you’ve already done this work. 3. How do you want people to feel after they meet you? This can apply to a bunch of different things for varying brands. How do you want people to feel after they leave your piano studio? How do you want people to feel after they’re done consulting with you? How you do want people to feel after your audition? Again, the more specific, the better! You can duplicate that feeling in pictures, and before people even hire you, they will feel that way by just being on your website or social media. I think this is the most important one.
4. Are there any props you can bring from your workplace? People doing what their skilled at is SO FUN to photograph. If you’re a vocal teacher, bringing sheet music or a keyboard. If you ar a business consultant, bringing a computer or other office supplies. If you are an actor, your favorite acting book or dance shoes. It puts you in your element and out of weird photoshoot land. It grounds you. These can also be symbolic things! Like in the cover photo from this blogpost, I wanted to show people how branding shoots are like a collaborative painting. I wanted to show it unfinished and in the making, and how everyone is as unique as the colors I pair them with. So my branding photographer and I painted during our shoot. I don’t paint. It has nothing to do with my photography business, but it does give a feeling of hardwork, optomism, and collaboration.
5. What does your ideal client look like? What’s their age range? Do they have a gender? Are they casual? Are they formal? This will also clue you in on what to wear. People are drawn to people who are similar to them. If you are representing these things, you will attract these things.
6. Can you bring a prop that sparks joy? This can be a range of things. This one is usually less practical and more fun. Lots of people opt to bringing their favorite drink, delicious and sooooo them. I brought a rug that I love with a million colors on it that makes me really happy. Maybe it will come in handy during the shoot and maybe it won’t. But this is you helping the photographer know what you’re about through a symbolic object that you selected.
